UC Vice President Named New Chancellor
Michael V. Drake, longtime UC faculty member and administrator, became the fifth chancellor of UC Irvine in July, succeeding Ralph J. Cicerone, chancellor since 1998.

A widely respected ophthalmologist and member of the National Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Medicine, Drake has been associated with the University for 30 years, beginning as a medical student at UC San Francisco and, since 2000, serving as UC vice president for health affairs, overseeing the education and research activities at UC’s 15 health science schools.

In recognition of his career-long efforts to promote social justice in medical education, in 2004 Drake received the Herbert W. Nickens, M.D., Award, one of the highest honors bestowed by the Association of American Medical Colleges. He has received several other prestigious awards for his service.

Drake holds an M.D. from UC San Francisco and two undergraduate degrees: an A.B. in African and African American studies from Stanford University and a B.S. in medical sciences from UCSF.

Additional information about Drake is available online.
